Chivers, Harry 1916

Harry Chivers. Died 5 December 1916

Harry was born in Colnbrook the son of William and Emily in about 1891. He was one of their 7 children.

In 1911 they lived at Kimberely cottages, Seaford Road, Wokingham though Harry was by then a groom at Westcourt, Finchampstead ( currently REME officers mess). By 1914 he had progressed to being a groom at Easthampstead park one of the estates owned by the Marquis of Downshire.

He joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment , 5th btn, D company where he became a sergeant. He died on 5th December 1916 and is buried in Arras. He was 25. A very good account of the fighting around Arras at the time can be found here:
A small obituary appeared in the Reading Mercury on 16th december 1916
“Mr and Mrs W Chivers have just received news of the loss of their second son Sergeant Harry Chivers. Before the war Harry Chivers was 2nd groom to the Marquis of Downshire. He has ” brothers serving.”
