Charles’ named on the Pozieres Memorial

Charles Chamberlain. Died 21 March 1918

Charles was son of William Henry and Emma, their eldest son. In 1911 he lived with his family at 21 Carey road, he was working as a garden labourer and his father worked as a nursery gardener. He was 25 in this census record.

He joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment in Reading and served as a Private until his death on 21st March 1918.

In a small notice in the Reading Chronicle 20th April 1918 telling of Charles’ death we learn that beofre the war he was under gardener at Wixenford ( today Ludgrove school).

Records show his next of kin then was his wife Elsie Maud, by this time his mother lived at Holly Cottage, Crowthorne.
