Parker, Alfred 1916

Alfred Charles Parker Died 11th May 1916
Alfred was born in 1878 in Sandhurst, Berkshire to mother, Maria and stepfather, Henry Searle. He was the first born and had nine step siblings, two step brothers and seven step sisters. By 1911, Alfred Charles had married Minnie Langley (herself one of twelve children) and was a father of four children; Charles (1902) Arthur (1904), Gladys (1906) and Doris (1908). In 1911 he had become a bricklayer’s labourer.
Alfred joined the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. The 3rd Battalion was essentially a training unit. New recruits went first to the 3rd for their basic training and for eventual posting to one of the regular

battalions. The battalion had a staff of officers and NCOs to support the training role as well as a number of men who performed miscellaneous duties. Many of these were men who, either through disease or injury, were no longer suitable for service in active units and who were employed on light duties. Although we do not of any possible previous service, it seems that Alfred may have been suffering from injury or illness as he died at home and is buried in the local St Sebastian Churchyard.
