Harry Hiscock. Died 31 May 1918
Harry Alfred was born in about 1883 in Reading. His parents, Harry and Ann were from Hampshire and his father had been a policeman. In 1911 Harry lived with his parents at 5 Broad Street Wokingham, this was a large property (8 rooms) and as his father was the caretaker of a bank we might assume that they lived on the premises, together with the acting manager. Young Harry was working as a grocer’s porter. He married in 1911, Agnes Gertrude Porchmouth who was born near Newbury, although she had also lived in London.
Harry joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment (number 201375) 2/4th battalion and died on 31st May 1918, he is buried in Robecq, which was at that time, being used for a cemetery during the battle of the Lys. His name is also commemorated on the grave of his parents (his mother pre-deceased him in 1917) in All Saint’s churchyard, Wokingham.
After the war his parental family lived at 14 Easthampstead Road and his wife at 33 Easthampstead
A small article in the Reading Chronicle on 11th May 1918 tells us an interesting tale about his brother Albert: “Driver A Hiscock who has been a prisoner since 1914 is now in a London hospital. His home is in Easthampstead Road and his father ex PC H Hiscock served in Reading .”
