William Henry was born in 1890 in Bisham, one of 7 children born to George and Sarah Hagger. In 1901 they lived in Hertfordshire, the county of George’s birth, and George was working as a stud groom. By 1911 the family were living at Mackeral Hall, Royston, Herts and William was working as a butcher’s assistant. George was still a groom, but a domestic one so perhaps working for the family of Mackeral Hall. There were a number of Hagger families in the area at the time.

William enlisted in Leicester into the royal Irish Fusiliers 1st Battalion (number 9475) and by this time he was living in Wokingham although we do not know why.

He was killed during the second battle of Arras on 11th April 1917 and his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial.
