Evans, Charles 1915

Charles was son of James and Nina, he had a brother James and a sister Louisa. He was born on 8th February 1895 and the family lived in Forest Road, Wokingham.

We do not know when he joined up but Charles served as a Private in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, Plymouth Battalion (16016).

The Helles Memorial

He served on HMS Goliath, a battlecruiser and the ship was deployed to the Dardenelles in Turkey in April 1915. Sadly on the night of 12/13th May 1915, the ship was anchored in Morto Bay where it was torpedoed with the loss of three quarters of the crew.

HMS Goliath appears on the Helles memorial of the ships that took part in the Gallipoli campaign and Charles’ name is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval  memorial .
