Gerald Carey. Died 29th April 1917

Gerald was the only son of George Bertram and Harriet Carey and was born in Stamford in about 1894, he had a sister Gladys. In 1901 they were living in Huntingdonshire where George ran a pub, but by 1911 George and Harriet lived in Abergavenny where he worked as a surgeon’s dispenser!  Gerald lived in the city of London where he worked as a salesman, aged 17.

He enlisted in London into the Royal Fusiliers, 10th battalion and became a corporal. He died in France on 29th April 1917 aged 23 probably during the battle for Arras and is buried at Duisans British cemetery.

We do not know what brought his parents to our town, but after the war and at the time of the building of the War Memorial, they lived at 1 Broad Street, Wokingham.
