Joseph Giles. Died 23 April 1915
Joseph jr was one of 12 children born to Joseph and Elizabeth Giles who in 1911 lived at Woodville, Crowthorne. He was born on 31st March 1889. Joseph snr was a house builder and although he was born in Sandhurst, his wife and most of the children were born in London and Essex.
He was over 5 feet 10 inches tall on enlistment, which was quite tall for the time. He also was described as having blue eyes and dark brown hair.
Joseph jnr had emigrated to Canada before the war and had married Amy. Before then he had served for 3 years with the Hampshire Territorials. He joined the Canadian Infantry, Alberta Regiment, 10th Battalion and rose to the rank of Company Sergeant Major.
He was killed aged 26 on 23 April 1915 and his name is on the Memorial to the missing of the Ypres Salient, the Menin Gate. Amy lived in Calgary, Alberta.
