Sidney Davis. Died 16 October 1917

Sidney Arthur was one of 7 children born to Mark and Annie Davis of Plough Lane, Wokingham. Mark was a house painter and Sidney was born around 1898, their 2nd son.

Sidney joined the army before the war in March 1914, after a time as a bakery errand boy, and although he signed up in Gosport, he joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers, 1st battalion who would have been depoted in Scotland.

Sidney’s service was not without blemish! He seemed to spend a year or so in Scotland and at one stage was charged with deserting when he “fraudulently enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders” It was decided to take no further action however and Sidney was transferred to the 6th Battalion and eventually promoted to Lance Corporal in December 1915.

He seems to have spent the rest of his time with the RSF in the depot and in September 1917, was transferred to the Labour Corps and posted as Lance Corporal to the 33rd company. This would have been in France /Belgium and  sadly only a month after posting on 16th October 1917 he died. He is buried in Menin Road South Cemetery, near Ypres.
