
The Name of Alfred Butler at Tyne Cot, a memorial dedicated to the soldiers whose bodies were not recovered
Alfred Butler. Died 16 August 1917
Alfred was son of Annie and Edward Butler one of 10 children. In 1911 he lived with his widowed father at 2 hatch ride Crowthorne. He enlisted into the Royal Berkshire Regiment in Wokingham (number 31176) and served in the 2nd Battalion.
He died on 16th August 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. This was a very bloody day for the battalion at the battle of Langemark, near Ypres.

Alfred Butler and H (Harry) Butler are not close relatives.
Alfred was the grandson (see 1901 census) of Edward Butler, whose wife had died in 1889.
Harry Butler was the son of Charles and Jane Butler who lived on Forest Road, Wokingham. Harry is listed outside the old Forest Road school.
