James Richard Chandler (Date of death unknown)
James was born in 1885 in Thatcham, Berkshire to father, James and mother Caroline. He was the first born and had two siblings, a brother Albert and sister, Mary. In 1901 the family lived at Cricket Hill ,Finchampstead. By the age of 26, James was serving in the Royal Berkshire Regiment, Second Battalion and 1911 was serving in India.
Beyond 1911, we lose track of James and the circumstances of his death are not clear, although he is remembered on the Wokingham War Memorial. His brother Albert was (we believe) killed in November 1914 (see his page) and Albert’s photograph states his brother had been previously killed.
This would mean his death was in the early part of the war.
However, looking at John Chapman’s history of the second battalion, there were no deaths prior to November 1914. James may have changed Battalion’s (a John Richard Chandler is named in the death records for the First Battalion) or somewhere along the line the facts are simply wrong. At present, we therefore at cannot name a death date.
Served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment Second Battalion in India in the 1911 census, ranked as a Private.
