John Croome. Died 2 September 1918

John was son of William and Hannah Croome and was born in Worcestershire. In 1911 John was working as a servant to a retired Captain, Henry Richards and his wife in Dolgelley, Merionethshire (Wales). John was their butler, they also employed a cook and 6 other servants.
He enlisted in to the Army in Winchester and joined the Hampshire Regiment (number 22986) 10th battalion.
We do not know what brought John to Wokingham, but in the summer of 1916 he married Ada (Luah?) and they lived at Ferndale Villas, Wescott Road. Ada died in the autumn of 1965.
John fought with his battalion in the Balkans and died in Greece on 2nd September 1918 aged 37.  His battalion had been involved in the capture of an enemy salient the previous day and sadly John and 45 others were killed.
