Charles Eales. Died 22 August 1917

Both Charles and his brother George are on our memorial. Charles was born in 1894, the son of George and Ann (nee Lee) Eales. Charles was born in Shinfield and by 1901 the family lived at 3 Model Cottages, Seaford Road, Wokingham.

George was a general labourer. By 1911 Charles was 17 and living a boarder with the Strong family in Denmark Street. He was working as a dairyman’s labourer.

By the time he enlisted he lived at Broadmoor Asylum, presumably he was working there. He enlisted into the Royal Berkshire Regiment 2/4th Battalion (202377). He saw service with the battalion in France then Belgium, where he was killed in the 3rd battle of Ypres on the 22ndAugust 1917. Sadly his body was lost and his name is therefore remembered on the the Tyne cot memorial.
