Harry was born in 1887, a son of Aaron and Rosetta Eamer. In 1901 the family lived in Toutley where Aaron worked as a gardener. By 1911 Harry was serving in the army, 2nd battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, (which was overseas) whilst his parents lived alone on the Toutley estate, their 10 children all having left home.
Harry had married in the spring of 1916, Rose (Carrie) Lawrence and sadly Harry was killed on the opening day of the battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916 aged 28.
His body has no known grave and he is commemorated on the great memorial at Thiepval.
Harry appears on the Roll Of Honour in St Catherine’s Church, Bearwood, Berks.
The website states that in the Spring of 1916 Harry married Rose (Carrie) Lawrence. I believe that this is factually incorrect. Firstly I do not believe that there was anyone known as Rose (Carrie) Lawrence. The confusion arises because about this time there were two young men named Harry Eamer: (1) born 1887 in the Wokingham Registration District and (2) born 27 August 1888 in the Beech Hill/Mortimer area. They may well have been cousins of some degree as Harry (2)’s father, George Eamer was born in Hurst.
Harry(2) married Rose Lawrence (born 19 December 1888) in Reading, Q1 1916. He served in the Royal Marines, 1907 – 1919 and died in 1964.
The only other marriage record that I could find for a ‘Harry Eamer’ around 1916 was for Harry Eamer & Carrie Blake, registered Q3 1915 in the Epsom Registration District. Carrie Blake was born 9 September 1888 in Hurst. In the 1911 Census she was in domestic service in Wallington, Surrey. I am therefore inclined to think that this is the ‘Carrie’ referred to, not Rose Lawrence.
Following Harry(1)’s death in 1916 there is a marriage record for Carrie Eamer & Albert Knight, Q2 1919, Wokingham. In Q2 1976 there is death record for Carrie Knight which provides her date of birth.
I believe this confusion of the two Harrys has been perpetuated in several family trees on the Ancestry website and I believe it should be put straight.
