Fage, George 1916

George Fage. Died 26 July 1916

We know very little about George. In 1911 he lived in St Pancras in London, he worked as a printer’s assistant and lived with his wife Annie and 2 young children, Mary and George. Three other children had died.

When he came to Wokingham we don’t know, but he served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment 5th Battalion.

He died  on 26th July 1916. His battalion had fought in the battle of the Somme earlier that month and it was there he was badly wounded.

An obituary for George appeared in the Reading Standard on 5th August 1916

‘The funeral of Private George Fage took place on Saturday, the deceased had been twice wounded and sucumbed to his injuries on July 26th at Newcastle on Tyne. Internment took place at the parish church with military honours.’
