Charles Townsend Died 13 July 1916
Charles was born in 1893 to father, Thomas and mother Mary in Wokingham, Berkshire. He was the fourth born and had five siblings; two brothers and three sisters. By the age of 18, he had become a servant at Wellington College in Crowthorne, Berkshire. His father was a bricklayers labourer and the family lived at 24 Seaford Road, Wokingham in 1901.
Charles joined the Royal West Surreys, 7th Battalion around 1916 and was soon on his way to France. By 1916 he had been killed on the 13th of July, during the Battle of the Somme. He is commemorated at Thiepval, a monument built for those with no known grave.
