Robert Rogers Died 4th August 1917
Robert was born in 1891 in Reading, to mother Margaret Emma Rogers, In the 1891 Census, we see Margaret is a scullery maid aged 19, at Calcot Park. Within 18 months, Robert was born in 1893, in the Calcot town of Reading. The period would have been difficult for both of them and we do not know where they lived. However, in 1899 she had met and married a builder, William Collar and they had a child Ivy Helen in 1900. Robert was to now have a settled period in his short life and by 1911, Robert is still living with the family aged 17. He was a coal merchant and they were now living in 8 Hatch Ride in Crowthorne, Berkshire.
Robert enlisted in Aldershot with the 6th Dragoons (inniskilling), also known as the Household Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line (incl. Yeomanry and Imperial Camel Corps). Like most of the Cavalry units, the Dragoons became an infantry unit. Robert died in the area of Peronne and is buried in the Tincourt Cemetery. The villages of Tincourt and Boucly were occupied by British troops in March 1917, during the German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line. As yet we are unaware of the circumstance of Robert’s death.
