Ernest Challis. Died 23 July 1916
Ernest was the eldest son of John and Ellen and lived in Emmbrook. In 1911 he worked as a bricklayer as did his father. He enlisted in Wokingham and joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion. The 2nd Battalion were fighting at Vermelles when Ernest was killed. aged 21. Here is an account of the fighting:
