Brown, George 1916

George Henry Brown. Died 20 July 1916

George ‘Harry’ Brown was the eldest son of Henry and Mary Brown and was born about 1885 in Godstone Surrey. By 1901 the family had moved to Wokingham where they lived in Havelock Road. George Harry was by this time working as a railway clerk, his elder sister Katie was an Elementary school teacher.
By 1911 George was not living at home, but as a boarder at 1 Havelock Road with the Simpson family and was by now working as a bricklayer.
He joined the 6th Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment in Wokingham and served as a Private until his death on 20th July 1916. He is buried in Corbie.
The battalion took part in the Battle of the Somme from the 1st July1916 and it seems likey that George was wounded then and taken back to the Corbie area where there were many military hospitals. It is here he died.
An excellent account of the Battalion’s part in that battle can be seen here:
After the war Henry and Mary lived at 7 The Terrace, Wokingham.
