William White. Died 13th November 1916
William was born in 1895 at Sandhurst and was the eldest son of four children. He lost his father at the age of only ten and was to be joined by four step brothers and sisters when his mother remarried Willam Sheppard. William was to join the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry and was to do well in reaching the rank of Lance Corporal before dying on the 13th November 1916. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission places William’s death in the final Battle of the Somme: ‘ Beaumont-Hamel was captured in November 1916, in the Battle of the Ancre, and the graves in this cemetery are largely those of men who died at that time. The burials were carried out by the V Corps in the spring of 1917, after the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line’.
