William Holloway. Died 14 November 1916
William Henry was born in December 1891 in Wokingham to William and Charlotte, he was their 2nd son. In 1901 the family lived at 62 Rose Street and by 1911 had moved to 57 Peach Street. William snr was a jobbing gardener.
William Henry joined the 1st Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment and was killed in the desperate fighting in the Serre area toward the end of the Battle of the Somme on 14th November 1916. This was very bloody day and to quote the battalion war diary
“The Royal Berkshire lost cruelly. The casualty list gave: Officers, 2 killed, 3 wounded, and 1 missing. Other Ranks, 29 killed, 106 wounded, 62. Missing: Altogether 204 out of an initial strength of 435 “
Willliam’s body was not recovered and his name is commemorated on the Memorial at Thiepval.
