Greenman William 1916

William Greenman. Died 11 November 1916

William was born in Lambourn/Gloucestershire in 1886, the son of Arthur and Katherine. He was one of 7 children.

In 1910 William married Daisy Bacon in Reading. Daisy was the mother of William’s son Arthur Charles who was born in 1907 (died in 2001). William worked as a brickyard labourer and the family lived in Eastheath, Wokingham together with Arthur, William’s younger brother who boarded with them.

William joined the Royal Bershire Regiment 2nd battalion (number 24531) and died on 11 November 1916. The battalion were still fighting on the Somme and William has no known grave, his name being on the memorial at Thiepval. This memorial was created for those soldiers whose remains could not be found and their names are marked around the building walls.

After the war his wife moved to London and lived near Regents Park.
