Samuel Cooper Died 25 June 1915
In 1901 they still lived with his maternal grandfather Samuel Head who was the publican at the Welcome Inn Peach Street.
By 1911 the family lived in Seaford road although at 15 Samuel had a live-in job as a hall boy at the home of a wealthy stock broker, Guy Stewart St Aubyn, in Sunninghill. There were 3 maids, a butler, a cook, a footman and young Samuel on the staff.
However, Samuel enlisted in Bath and joined the Somerset Light Infantry, A company, 6th Battalion:
He was killed at the age of 19 on 25th june 1915 , probably in the 2nd battle of Ypres where his name is commemorated on the great Menin Gate
.
I have my great Uncle Harry’s “death penny” in front of me now. I often wondered where it came from, and what happened to him. Thankyou for filling in some details.
