Wingfield, George 1918.

Sidney – Kathleen – John – John – George – Kate – Ernest – Avis

George Wingfield was qualified as a fitter in Reading. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 and within the year was killed. It was 22 January 1918. He was 23 years old and had already achieved the rank of Sergeant Major.

He is buried at  St Catherine’s churchyard, Bearwood. The photo is of George (back second from right) with his parents and siblings. Look below to follow George’s family tree. His family lived on King Street.

More questions than answers! I wonder how George moved being an engineering fitter to being a member of the RFC? Was he a pilot or ground staff? The latter seems more obvious. but how then did he die? By accident or maybe an illness. George is buried in Bearwood, Wokingham, but his death is not recorded in civil records (that can be found at present). Also, looking at his photograph it seems that his brother John also joined the Flying Corps. On George’s recruitment papers, it stated a Mr Williams recommended him to the Corps. Maybe his brother was recommended in the same way. So who was Mr Williams (Rtd) ? A member of staff or a friend of the family? We know he was a member of the army wing and not the naval wing (RFC was attached to one or the other).

In the 1901 census George was 6 years old and living with his parents in King Street, Winnersh although he was born at East Meon in Hampshire. His father John WINGFIELD was working as a sub-postmaster and cow keeper.
His mother was Kate Louisa the daughter of George and Sarah FORD.
Sarah nee GILES was George FORD’s second wife and sister to his first wife Mary nee GILES and she can be seen on the 1911 above as a widowed mother-in-law to George’s father, John WINGFIELD. George FORD is my greatgreat-grandfather through his first wife Mary. John is shown as a general carrier.
I have searched for George’s memorial headstone at St. Caterine, Bearwood but have as yet not found it.
My family tree is on public view on the Ancestry website.
