Bruce Hills Nicholson. Died 3rd May 1917
Bruce was the 2nd of 3 sons and 5th child of Alfred James Nicholson and his wife Letitia Marion. He was born on the 30th November 1893 in Wokingham. His parents lived at the time in Glebelands, his father was a wealthy stock broker and the family had 8 staff at home. In 1911 ( at the time of the census) Bruce was staying with friends, also very wealthy, in Leighton Buzzard.
Bruce joined the Royal Fusiliers which was his elder brother’s regiment. He joined the 6th Battalion but was attached to the 4th battalion who landed in France in August 1914 and fought in France throughout the war. Bruce was a Lieutenant when he died on 3rd May in the Arras offensive of 1917 and although he has no known grave, is commemorated on the Arras memorial to the missing.
At the time of his death his widowed mother is given as living in Kensington however in his probate documents his address is given as Chetwode, Wokingham.
