A picture of George Bird, John’s elder brother.
John Bird. Died 20 November 1917
John was son of George and Elizabeth Bird of 10 Fairview cottages, Wokingham, the second eldest of their 9 children. He was born in 1893 in Bray but by 1901 the family were living in Winnersh where George and John worked as cowmen.
John joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment 5th Battalion in Wokingham. He was serving with the battalion in France and they were involved in the action at Cambrai on 20th november 1917.
Sadly John and a great many of his collegues were killed that day. His body was not recovered from the battlefield and his name is commemorated on the memorial to the missing at Cambrai.
